AIR Cadets from 372 (Barry) Squadron were presented with the keys to their new squadron headquarters.

The £700,000 facility – funded by Wales Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association; will be used by 372 (Barry) Squadron, Air Training Corps and the Barry Detachment of the Army Cadet Force.

The new building is nearly 50 per cent larger than the original buildings which it replaces and includes a drill hall, classrooms, storerooms and offices.

The Joint Cadet Centre has been named Ty Byron Jenkins in tribute to the memory of Lieutenant Colonel Byron Jenkins BEM, who had connections to both the Royal Air Force and the Army Cadet Force.

Cadet Luke Beecham said: “I was amazed at the new squadron headquarters, how big the rooms were.”

Corporal James Jelinski said: “I remember the old squadron building fondly; but this new squadron is so much bigger and better and the amount of stuff we can do now is brilliant."

Flight Lieutenant Jason Horton, commanding officer said: “This new and modern squadron headquarters for the cadet forces is a truly amazing facility which will benefit the cadets for many years come, as well as improving the training experience which the cadets receive.

"As we settle in to our new home, we are looking forward to the official opening ceremony which will take place later in 2017.

"This is the future of the cadet forces living together in a purpose built building.

"Thanks also go to 5th Barry Scout group; who have hosted us during the last 13 months.”

As well as ceremonial and community duties the Air Cadets undertake many exciting activities and opportunities including flying, shooting, sports, adventure training, team building exercises, expeditions, overseas trips, field craft training and Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme expeditions.
