BARRY Comprehensive School held a 'Celebration of Creative Arts and Culture' auction to raise money for our partner school in Ghana, Juaben Senior High School.

The project, which began in 2010, has successfully linked the two schools together to develop joint curriculum projects.

Barry Comprehensive School art teacher Miss McCormick began the project by developing global education within the art curriculum and this has now grown tremendously to include many departments in the school.

The partnership between both schools is reciprocal; however the Ghanaian school is heavily underfunded and monies raised at the auction will be used to help keep their curriculum up to date with essential learning resources.

The auctioneer on the night was drama teacher, Ms Walters who said: "It was my job to raise as much money as possible. It was a warm and friendly atmosphere, despite the banter between me and the bidders.

"Some of the items sold on the night were paintings from pupils of the school, one of which sold for £50, and a signed Welsh football shirt which was sold for £40."

The generous auction audience included local MP Alun Cairns as well as several members of Cardiff Blues Rugby Club.

Year 13 student, George Scott sent over fifty emails to local dignitaries, restaurants, charities and businesses to invite them to the event.

Miss McCormick said: "The whole event and process has been a success. Raising money like this can help in our next stage of the partnership and will hopefully allow easier communication between us and our Ghanaian partners."

In total, the auction raised over £1,500.
