COUNCILLOR Les Sword was elected town mayor at Barry Town Council's annual meeting at the Memorial Hall and Theatre on Monday (May 14).

His wife Rachel will act as his consort for his year in office.

Cllr Claire Curtis will serve as the town's deputy mayor during 2012/13, and her consort will be husband Cllr Rob Curtis.

Cllr Sword, originally from Perth in Scotland, was formerly an aircraft technician and learning representative for the Welsh Assembly.

He said: "I look forward to working with others to promote Barry as a fantastic place to live and work."

The mayor selected Ty Hafan and the Teenage Cancer Trust as his two charities for the year, with Mark Banks named as his chaplain. The Civic Service will take place at a date to be announced.

A catering mix-up meant the council, on the night, shopped in Morrisons supermarket and paid the carrier bag charges to get food for the buffet!
