TWO-time Olympic medallist and qualifier for the London 2012 Olympic Games, David Davies, taught a special swim class for British Airways staff at Imperial College, London.
British Airways staff undergo extensive training to become cabin crew from premium service training through to swimming. They undertake a series of practical and written exams from safety and medical training to learning how to make the perfect cup of tea and even delivering babies on-flight!
Barry-born Davies, who specialises in long-distance swimming (10k marathon and 1500m freestyle), was on hand to extend their swimming credentials as a thank you for the support he has received from the airline.
David has been swimming competitively since the age of eight and at 18 had already achieved international fame in Athens, winning bronze in the 1500m. His strong performance continued and he represented Great Britain at the Beijing 2008 games, winning silver in the 10k marathon.
Now qualified for the London 2012 Olympic Games, he will be flying the flag for Great Britain for the third time.
"There is always a lot of pressure and focus on Olympic years, but it’s days like this which are a bit of fun that help to keep you balanced," he said.
"British Airways has done such a great job looking after me and flying me to competitions and training camps all over the world that it has been a pleasure to be able to help out and share my passion with some of the staff.
"This will be my third Games but that doesn’t mean it’s any less exciting than the first time," he added.
"There are always fresh challenges, new competitors and you need to stay focused. The London 2012 Games will be like nothing else and I am so privileged to be a part of it."
British Airways is the official airline partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and is dedicated to helping British talent fly.
As part of its ongoing commitment and support of British athletes, including David Davies, Team GB and ParalympicsGB and sporting bodies, the airline also supports a number of athletes through a UK Sport partnership.
Luisa Fernandez, British Airways sponsorship manager, said: "David has achieved so much in his young years and we are proud that British Airways has played a small part in helping him reach his goals. We are fully behind him as he prepares for the London 2012 Games."
