THE VALE of Glamorgan Council says it is treating a potential cockroach infestation at Barry Leisure Centre "very seriously" after a cluster was spotted in a unisex changing room.

A member of the public came across the troublesome insects while getting changed after a visit to the Health Suite.

He was so concerned with what he saw, that he is now calling on the council to close down the facility until the problem is sorted.

"The changing rooms are within metres of the restaurant and therefore the centre should be closed down in the interest of public health," he said.

The man, who does not want to named, described the moment he came across the pests, which feed on faeces and carry potentially life-threatening diseases.

He said: "I was getting changed when out of the corner of my eye I saw something scurrying across the floor. When I took a closer look I realised it was a cockroach. Then a few more came crawling out from underneath the lockers and heating unit.

"I informed some members of staff; one of them was nearly sick and another clobbered one of them on the head and carted it off."
