PENSIONERS on a Barry council estate claim they are being terrorised by teenage yobs who smash lamps and throw mud balls at windows.

The elderly residents of Pontalun Close, Gibbonsdown, are becoming increasingly isolated after the Vale of Glamorgan Council decided to scrap the over-50s rule and let people of all ages live on the estate.

One frightened resident, who did not want to be named for fear of reprisal, said: "The council got its own way on the issue of the old peoples flats in Pontalun Close.

"First they let under-50s move in, then under-40s. They then said we would have a warden but no warden appeared.

"Now the pensioners who are left are being persecuted by teenage yobs who smash lamps and fencing in Pearce Court."

He added: "There are as many as 30 yobs running riot and they have now started throwing mud balls at windows and walls."

The Vale Council has responded to claims by saying they would not hesitate to take action against any individual identified as being guilty of anti social-behaviour. They said that any tenant who has concerns should contact them direct.

Acting operational manager Mike Ingram said:

"Although we are not aware of any ongoing problems relating to youth annoyance at Pontalun Close specifically, we know that the police are currently addressing similar issues across the wider area through more patrols and school visits."
