A VALE councillor is calling for the reinstatement of a free asbestos pick-up service after a resident in his ward was given the wrong advice.
The Vale of Glamorgan Council did at one time provide such a service but this was stopped due to various issues.
However, Cllr Richard Bertin, who represents Court Ward in Barry, believes its reinstatement is much needed, along with better advice for the disposal of the hazardous waste.
In his report to the council's economy and environment committee, Cllr Bertin asks if the council could provide a service similar to one run in Swansea which he says would cost the authority about 60,000 a year.
"This is a small price to pay for a service that is essential to public safety," he said.
"With fly tipping becoming a major problem and not everyone having access to a suitable vehicle, the introduction of this service is essential."
A spokesman for the Vale Council pointed out that there was a special container for the disposal of household asbestos waste at the Llandow civic amenity site.
The spokesman said: "The Vale's handling of such waste, eg garage roof sheets, drain pipes, etc through a civic amenity site, is in line with the policy adopted by most other Welsh local authorities."
