1st Team - Welsh League Division 1

Barry Town 0

Dinas Powys 0

THIS was the second time in eight days these two clubs had met - with Dinas having won the first encounter - so you didn't have to be a genius to know that Barry would be going all out to gain revenge.

The first chance fell to Dinas, when Billy Clarke in the Barry goal attempted to clear the ball, only to see it hit his own defender and rebound just wide of the post for a corner, which was taken quickly and Neil Jeremy shot over the bar.

On 15 minutes, a Dinas goal-kick was driven straight back towards the Dinas goal for Ohene Na Quinhare to shoot wide, and within a couple of minutes, Ramos Karvouniaris robbed a Barry defender took the ball to the edge of the area, but shot narrowly wide.

On 36 minutes Barry attacked down the left, the ball was crossed to Nmamdi Iyizoba, but Richie Johnson made a great save tipping the ball over the bar from his well taken shot.

Just before half-time Dinas gained a throw near the corner taken by Jason Cowans to Liam Beddard whose shot from an acute angle was pushed behind for a corner.

The first 20 minutes of the second half was a bit of a stalemate with neither side able to create any meaningful chances until a Barry attack ended with a good cross, only for Leon Jeanne to head tamely at the keeper.

This seemed to wake up both sides and Dinas replied with two Neil Jeremy shots and Barry's Chris Harry headed towards goal, only to see his attempt pushed over.

With 15 minutes left, Dinas were controversially denied a penalty, and were awarded a free kick on the edge of their area. This was taken by Neil Jeremy and his shot hit the side netting. Further half-chances came, but both sides had to make do with a point each.

1st Team - Welsh League Division 1

Dinas Powys 3 Pontardawe Town 1

Both sides came into this game unbeaten, so Dinas knew they were up against a strong side.

The first 13 minutes of the game Pontardawe had the majority of the possession, but only created one shooting opportunity when Carl Mainwaring fired a 25-yard free-kick over the crossbar.

It was against the run of play when Phillip James was given too much room just outside the penalty area, and he made no mistake with a low shot beating Chris Curtis in the Pontardawe goal.

The goal gave the home side the boost they needed and were taking the game to Pontardawe, and when Paul Carro was fouled on the left of the area, Nathan Hosgood crossed the resulting free-kick for Liam Jones who found himself with plenty of room eight yards out and fired past the keeper to double the lead.

Just before half-time Ramos Karvouniaris' shot was beaten out by the keeper and when Pontardawe replied, Kurt Bettles was on hand to clear from a corner.

After 51 minutes, a free-kick on the right side of the area was taken by Carl Mainwaring, forcing the home keeper to punch clear under pressure, then a few minutes later Pontardawe won the ball on the halfway line, carried the ball to the edge of the area and crossed low and hard - but just in front of Jamie Rickard when well placed to score.

Dinas were still creating chances and on 83 minutes a long ball out of defence found Nathan Hosgood who, in typical fashion, weaved his way into the area, and despite being dragged to the floor by a defender, just managed to pass the ball to Ramos Karvouniaris all by himself in front of goal to score the third.

Pontardawe were not to be denied and became the first side this season to breach the Dinas rearguard when Steven Cox headed in.

So the excellent start to the season continues, with Dinas four points clear at the top of Welsh League Division 1.
