ON Saturday Vale AM and Barry resident Jane Hutt was joined by a crowd of enthusiastic children to cut the ribbon at the launch of the miniature railway on Barry Island Station.

And the event tied in with the Bank Holiday celebrations for Thomas the Tank's 60th birthday.

The miniature railway is the latest attraction restored to tip-top condition by the volunteers of the Vale of Glamorgan Railway Company.

Running alongside Thomas the Tank steam engine and Daisy the Diesel, Barry Island was packed with visitors on Bank Holiday Saturday.

Mrs Hutt said: "Special thanks to the volunteers who have brought the miniature railway back into fully functioning condition, with a superb engine shed designed and built by John Paul, with the help of Graham Jones and Stephen Newman.

"With Thomas the Tank attracting the crowds for his 60th birthday, a ride on the miniature railway proved a hit with all the youngsters as they arrived on the platform."
