A BARRY woman has been voted the Vale's top lollipop lady.

But modest Karen Jewess, who helps the children of Jenner Park get to school safely, paid tribute to all the crossing patrol volunteers in the area.

"I did not expect to win this award because there are many other deserving patrols and I really accept it on behalf of all patrols, as we all face the same conditions and dangers."

Karen was presented with her award by the Vale of Glamorgan's cabinet member for planning and transportation, Cllr Tony Williams.

He said: "I find it particularly pleasing to once again highlight the contribution to road safety made by the school crossing patrol service over the years. In particular, I would like to pay tribute to each and every patroller working for the Vale Council, which, without doubt, has the best patrol service in Wales."

Also receiving area awards were: Penarth - Margaret Regan (Victoria Primary); Sully and Dinas Powys - Carol Garland (Dinas Powys Infant and Murch Junior); Barry - Pam Griffiths (High Street Primary); St Athan, Rhws and Llantwit Major - Shirley Dorkings (Rhws Primary).

There was a special award for "The Peterston Ladies" group of Betty Stears, Bonny Hodsell and Thelma Bolston, for their voluntary work as school crossing patrols with the Peterston Walking Bus.
