BARRY people have a lot to be proud of if the nominations for Citizen of the Year are anything to go by.

The forms are flooding in as friends and families put names forward to thank loved ones. Ria Davies filled in the form, listing all her mother's achievements. She said: "My mum Frances, a qualified councillor, helped me through a traumatic attack. She fell last year and broke her leg. But she still keeps house, looks after me and my dad, and volunteers with Girls' Brigade and Guides. This is all despite losing her mum to a long-term illness last year."

Another potential Citizen of the Year is Brian Dale. Put forward by his wife, Brian is applauded by Helen. She said: "Following Brian's retirement 15 years ago, his sole occupation has consisted of voluntary service. It started in 1966 in Barry, continued when we moved to Newcastle and carried on when we moved back in 1986. He works in the local Citizen's Advice Bureau two days a week and assists in the Blind Bowls Group. He also helps out with transport for the blind."

Yet another nominee helps troubled souls, but of the feathered variety. Ann Bird has been named for this award by friend Viv Richards. Viv said: "Almost single-handedly, Ann runs Barry Swan Rescue. She does this 365 days a year, looking after all kinds of birds. I've known her be up to her waist in mud to help an animal in distress. She gives talks and invites disabled children to the centre. Some of them would never have the chance to meet these creatures any other way."

There is still time to nominate your loved one. Pick up a form from the News and return it to the Barry Town Council Offices, 7 Gladstone Road, CF62 8NA before Monday, April 8.
