EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of March 20, 1952: Herman Cahill, who is shortly due for release, played at scrum-half for the Welsh Guards' Rugby team which beat the Duke of Wellington Regiment for the championship of BAOR at Hanover last Wednesday.

The Welsh Board of Health has notified the Barry Town Council that in the present economic circumstances they could not approve the erection of greenhouses for the Parks Department at a cost of £8,000.

There was a great deal of public interest in the Queen Mary trailer which was at King Square during the past week exhibiting Royal Engineers' work. The exhibition contained some interesting working models of the Royal Engineers' machinery and equipment.

Barry Town yesterday signed Ivor Powell, the former Queen's PR and Aston Villa inside forward or wing half, who has been capped 14 times for Wales.

The erection of 21 old age pensioners' bungalows at the north-west corner of the Buttrills Road housing site is to start in a month.

The unofficial strike of Barry Dock's maintenance workers ended on Monday. The men returned to work following a mass meeting vote on Friday in favour of ending the stoppage.

A Barry Island man will be the next Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan. Cllr John B Cotter, of Phyllis Street, has been nominated to succeed Cllr Percy Chapple.

The Barry Round Table held its 21st birthday celebration ball at Bindles. The chairman of Barry Round Table Mr Derek Day and his wife Margaret, welcomed more than 400 Tablers and guests.

The first cargo of a 1,000 tonne consignment of silicon metal from Norway was discharged on Tuesday at Barry Docks from the mv Hannelore.

Inflation has killed off plans to re-open the railway line for passengers between Barry and Bridgend.

The South Glamorgan County Council is to mount an exercise in Barry to assess the reaction of shoppers to the possible pedestrianisation of Holton Road.
