A YOUNG Barry golfer is hitting the big time after being chosen to play for Wales against England.

Rhys Williams, 16, of New House Court was one of just six players picked for the Welsh Union tournament to be held in April, and the only one from the Vale of Glamorgan.

The competition will see under-16's players from Wales and England pitting their wits against each other in the Celtic Manor.

The St Richard Gwyn pupil has been playing golf for only four years, and has already shown his talent in the sport. Showing a keen interest in cricket, rugby and football, his parents Sara, 39, and Andrew, 40, have always known he was good at sport, but thought football would be his favourite.

His mother Sara, 39, said: "Rhys has always been extremely good at sport. But we knew he was really keen on golf when he saved up for his own clubs.

He started by collecting balls at St Andrews and wanted to buy a set. His very first clubs cost only £35. Now, he's playing with a set worth £1,000."

Even though Rhys has only been playing for four years, he has a huge collection of trophies and medals.

Sara added: "He's sitting his GCSEs this year, and if he does well in them, there'll be no stopping him in the golfing arena. We're all so proud of him."
