As an ex-Barry resident who was born and bred in the town, I still take a keen interest in the area's affairs.

Recently, I visited Barry to see some old friends and we got around to discussing the old Town Hall and King Square site.

While the neglect of our once proud town centre was high on the agenda, we also debated the origins of the now-crumbling site.

I have heard that King Square was named after King George, but my friends think it may have been called after Jack King, a former Barry Town councillor.

Can any readers help? Does anyone know the date King Square was built, when it was named, who it was named after, if there was an official ceremony - and indeed if there ever was a councillor called Jack King?
