A BARRY man is urging the town to throw their weight behind the Knap's 'last chance.'

Tony Holden, 61, of Hazeldene Close, wants Barrians to support the Dow Corning grant offered to the Vale of Glamorgan Council. He believes this money would help revamp the derelict lido and restore it to its former glory.

The Gibbonsdown resident, who worked for the international chemical company for 35 years, says his former employers are always keen to help the local community.

He told the News: "This is another chance for the Vale of Glamorgan Council to accept help with the Knap.

"They've had so many in the past and they've let the pool lapse into this terrible state."

Dow Corning officials have confirmed that they would be happy to accept an application to their grant foundation for cash to restore the pool.

But a spokesman for the Vale of Glamorgan council could only say that they are still looking into the current options in detail.

This has infuriated Mr Holden.

He said: "The politicians are dragging their heels, and some councillors have said that the youngsters wouldn't want it. Have they asked them?" His granddaughter Philippa, 13, said: "I do remember swimming in the Knap.

"It was great, and we really would like to see it come back. The Leisure Centre is alright, but it's a bit boring. It would be so much more fun out in the open."

Her friend Emma Cheetham added: "We were talking about it in school last week.

"I think it would be good to have it back again."

Tony added: "It's time we all stood up and said something. The council need to stop hedging and commit to an action plan. And we don't want houses. I know it would cost a lot, but if Dow Corning are willing to help, there must be others out there who will too. They did it on the Waterfront, let's do it on the Knap."
