LOVE it or hate it, the World Cup is coming to Barry this Friday, as footie fever sweeps the town.

Staged in Japan and Korea this time, some people have said the early mornings are going to put them off watching this eagerly-awaited sport spectacular.

But for all those die-hard fans desperate to track down the action, there is still plenty to be found in pubs and clubs around the town.

The Acropolis II on Barry Island is opening early and putting all the big games on the big screen.

Barman Tony Gardener said: "I don't mind opening to watch the big games. I'm here anyway and it will be nice to have company.

"The matches are going to be screened early, but we'll give the fans the strength to put their hearts into supporting their teams with a kick-off breakfast menu. It'll be just £2.75 while the game is on."

Regulars Barrie Jones, 28, and Caroline Gully, 22, will be in the Acropolis II whenever work allows.

The Three Bells pub will be giving Cadoxton football fans the chance of seeing live action on the big screens. No matter what time the whistle blows for kick-off, Jan and Clint Harris are making special arrangements for their customers.

And Arthur O'Leary from the Glenbrook Inn on Dobbins Road is making sure everyone knows he is open for business. He has organised a full selection of entertainment.

For the Golden Jubilee, there will be royal celebration events and Jubilee lunches.

And for the World Cup, while the games are shown on the big screen and multi-television system, there are kick-off breakfasts and food at all other times.

But knowing there are many people in the town who would rather watch paint dry than worry about Beckham's foot, most local pubs are sticking to their usual routine.

If all else fails, you can always do a spot of DIY and have an excuse to watch that paint dry.
