BARRY mums and dads say they are dicing with danger every time they walk their children to school.

Ysgol Sant Curig parents have lashed out at irresponsible car drivers who blatantly ignore pupils safety when they drop off children at the school gates.

Mum Sue Jones told the News: "The College Hill entrance is turning into a nightmare. Some drivers have to find parking away from the school gates and then walk miles, whilst others just totally disregard the yellow markings and park anywhere.

"Add to this the steady flow of traffic passing the site, and we pedestrians find ourselves in the middle of chaos."

Ysgol Sant Curig is just one of many Vale schools who have horrendous access problems due to the mass of cars thundering through often narrow residential streets. This issue has also become worse since the regular Lollipop Lady, who left in January, has not been replaced.

Childminder Lindsay Reeves says it is a common situation.

She said: "It's very difficult here since the crossing patrol lady left. In the mornings, it's bad enough, but in the afternoon, some parents park on the lines, and go in to fetch their children. This causes bedlam."

Another parent added: "Those irresponsible carers who disgorge children from cars on the yellow lines obviously do not realise they are putting lives of other children at risk. By parking on the lines, they are obscuring the view of young people trying to cross safely into the gates."

Ysgol Sant Curig Mrs Hourahane said: "This has been a problem for schools all over the Vale of Glamorgan. We have been advertising for a lollipop lady since the New Year, but so far there have been no applicants.

It's only a small minority of people who park so irresponsibly, and we do ask them not to. It will be too late once an accident has happened and a child is hurt."
