A FIVE WEEK Vale of Glamorgan schools' football programme has been voted a great success.

Run by the Football Association of Wales and the Vale of Glamorgan Council, the programme provided youngsters and teachers with one-and-half hours of football a week and concentrated on improving skills and technique.

Training sessions culminated in small-sided games, and schools received new equipment, including balls and bibs.

Twenty eight Vale primary schools have taken part in the scheme this academic year and participating teachers received mentoring and training via the FAW teacher's award, which will be delivered in July.

The programme has encouraged more children to take part, with an increased number of pupils competing in both mixed and girls' only school football festivals.

Girls have also taken part in additional out of school football events via local fun centres and junior clubs.

Vale of Glamorgan Football Development Officer Ryland Morgans said: "I'm really pleased with the interest Vale schools have shown in the scheme. More girls are now playing football and the school festivals have been a great success. I look forward to working with the teachers on an ongoing basis."
