BARRY parents fear their toddler son may lose a kidney after being on a hospital waiting list for more than a year.

Kurdt Payne was misdiagnosed with a blockage when he was still in the womb.

His parents, Dean and Katie, of Church Road, claim their child's condition has worsened while he waits for treatment.

Katie, 18, told the News: 'We knew there was something wrong with little Kurdt's kidney when he was in the womb, but were assured that it was just a blockage which could be cleared with antibiotics.

"We experienced cancelled appointments and lost test results while we waited to see a consultant."

Dean, 27, said: "We were finally given an appointment for Monday February 9. When the consultant looked at Kurdt's test results, he discovered it was not a blockage as they first thought.

"Kurdt has a duplex kidney, which means it is split in two. If it had been recognised earlier, doctors might have been able to correct it and save both halves.

"But now it's almost certain that he will have to be operated on. He'll probably lose half his kidney, and possibly all of it."

After the consultation, the Paynes say they were not given a date for another appointment and were told Kurdt needed to go back on the waiting list.

They contacted Assembly Member Jane Hutt for her help. Ms Hutt, who is also health minister, said: "I contacted the family as the local AM, and they have given me permission to discuss their case with the hospital.

"I will be keeping a close eye on the case, because our main priority is making sure Kurdt gets the treatment he needs."

A Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust spokesman said: "The Trust is not able to discuss the personal details of treatment and health care relating to individual patients.

"We are able to say, however, the a follow up appointment has been arranged next week and that the parents are being kept fully informed by the clinicians handling their son's diagnosis."
