BARRY'S ambitious Central Park scheme could be shelved after it was revealed that it's main investor has a funding shortfall.

It has been revealed this week that the Welsh Development AGENCY (WDA) has a budget shortfall of £15-20 million.

Any cuts in their funding would have a dire effect on the £600, 000 cash needed to regenerate the Park.

Dilys Colbourne of the Barry Citizen Action Group (BCAG) has campaigned for 19 years to save the green area behind the former Town Hall.

She said: "I am very worried about this news. We have waited for a very long time for the Central Park to be given a new lease of life, and for it to be threatened in this way is disappointing."

Her concerns are shared by Vale Plaid Cyrmu leader Chris Franks.

He said: "Plaid hopes that the agreement with the WDA is watertight. It would be shattering if the development was affected.

"We need assurance from the Vale of Glamorgan Council that the finance for the Town Hall project is not now at risk."

The News attempted to contact the Vale of Glamorgan Council but they were unable to comment by the time we went to press.
