CAMPAIGNERS for a safer crossing on Holton Road have been granted their wish.

A petition of more than 500 signatures was sent to the Vale of Glamorgan Council in October last year.

They campaigned to have changes made to the original crossing on Holton Road at the Brook Street junction.

Roger Thomas-Jones, of Burlington Street, has been campaigning for years to get the crossing improved.

He said: "I am delighted that the improvements will be made to the crossing.

"I have seen some horrifying things when I have crossed the road at that point.

"On one occasion I walking across the crossing with my eight-year-old son and he was nearly knocked down.

"There have been a lot of near misses.

"I would have liked traffic lights, but these improvements are still very good."

A Vale of Glamorgan Council spokesman said: "We will be making changes to the crossing such as narrowing the carriageway.

"It should be completed in about two to three weeks, at a cost of 10,000 to 15,000.

"The funding for the changes is coming from the Safe Routes to School Fund, which is taken from the Welsh Assembly."

Councillor Barry Shaw was also involved in the campaign and said: "We have won the battle to make the crossing safer, which is a victory.

"The petition with 500 signatures was sent to the council, which meant they had to investigate the situation at the crossing.

"The matter was brought to our attention by resident Roger Thomas-Jones.

"There was a need for something to be done as residents were worried about the speeding cars."
