A 28-YEAR-OLD man was killed, and a woman and her baby are in a critical condition, after the car they were travelling in crashed at a junction in Sully.
Gareth Solomon and a 22-year-old woman, believed to be Mr Solomon's sister, from Cardiff, were travelling along Swanbridge Road in a silver Vauxhall Vectra when the car left the road at the junction with Cog Road and Sully Road.
The 22-year-old female passenger was pregnant and following an emergency Caesarean section, she and her baby remain in a critical condition in hospital.
No other cars were involved in the collision, which took place at around 8pm on Sunday (November 1).
A 22-year-old man, who was also in the car, has been arrested and released on bail pending further inquiries.
It is thought the trio were returning to Cardiff after visiting Sully.
Floral tributes were left at the crash site on Tuesday. A card on one bouquet read: “Gareth. RIP Bro. You’ll be missed. Much love, Vince and Paula.”
Another read: “A tragedy - we will miss you so much. Look after nanny and bampi. Forever in my heart. Julie, David and kids.”
Officers believe the Vauxhall Vectra was heading towards the junction from the direction of Beach Road.
A spokesman for South Wales Police said: “We are seeking witnesses to the collision or information as to the manner of driving of this vehicle in the area prior to this collision.”
Local residents say the junction is an accident blackspot and want traffic calming measures to be installed.
Shelley Chatwell, who lives opposite the crash site, said she often hears ‘sickening thuds’ as cars collide on Swanbridge Road.
“My husband Keith always goes out to see what’s happened - he’s never sure what he’ll find,” she said.
“We’ve lived here for 39 years and there have been so many accidents in that time.
“A car ended up on its roof about two months ago.
“The crash on Sunday was the first fatality,” she added.
“It’s prompted us to write to Sully Community Council to see if safety measures can be implemented here.
“Something needs to be done to slow cars down.”
Sunday’s crash comes after councillors recently pushed for more of the surrounding area to be made a 30mph zone.
Sully Ward councillor Sarah Sharpe said: “There have been quite a few incidents at the Swanbridge junction but nothing as serious as what happened on Sunday.
“It’s terrible news.”
South Wales Police is appealing for witnesses to the collision, or the manner in which the vehicle was being driven prior to the collision, to contact them on 101 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
