A NEW bus service running from Morrisons at Barry Waterfront to Marks & Spencer in Culverhouse Cross is to be officially launched by the Vale Council on Monday, September 28.

Service 90 (Barry - Culverhouse Cross) will be launched by Cllr Jeffrey James, cabinet member for planning and transportation, council planning and transportation officers and representatives from Veolia Transport Cymru, who will travel the new route to Culverhouse Cross, where they’ll be met by representatives from Marks & Spencer.

The service will be funded using a contribution recently made by Marks & Spencer under the terms of a section 106 planning obligation agreement following the store’s redevelopment.

The new route will provide an hourly service to residents with links between superstores Morrisons, Lidl, Tesco Extra and Marks & Spencer. The bus will travel along Ffordd y Mileniwm.

The bus will also serve the local bus service hub and retail area near King Square, and provide service provision for Woodfield Heights along Skomer Road, and Pencoedtre Village, where there is currently none.

A spokesperson for Bus Users UK welcomed the new service: "We are aware from our Bus User surgeries that some people who live in the Barry area have difficulty traveling to Culverhouse Cross to take advantage of the retail and employment opportunities available.

"It also provides an opportunity for residents at Pencoedtre village who don’t presently have a service to travel by bus.

"Service 90 provides a 7.36am arrival in Culverhouse Cross, with returns possible until 7.40pm."

Cllr James said: "I am pleased that in the current economic climate the council is able to introduce this new local bus service, which will be of benefit to many new and existing bus users and businesses.

"In addition to providing a new, regular service it will also benefit locations currently without public transport by connecting the commercial centre of Culverhouse Cross with Pencoedtre, Barry Town centre and the Waterfront, whilst improving access to the new Waterfront surgery."

The service will depart Barry Waterfront to Culverhouse Cross at five minutes past each hour and Barry Town Centre (Wyndham Street) at 14 minutes past each hour between the hours of 7.05am and 7.05pm; returning from Culverhouse Cross (M&S / Tesco bus stop) at 07.38, 08.38 and then 40 minutes past each hour between 9.40am and 7.40pm.

Timetables will be made available at various locations including the Dock Office, Civic Office, Barry Library, Marks & Spencers, onboard the service vehicle and online via our website - www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk
