A MAN has appeared at Barry Magistrates Court charged with the murder of a Barry dad, who was fatally stabbed on Monday, August 3.

Magistrates remanded John Austin Chivers, aged 30, of Cardiff Road, Barry, in custody to appear at Cardiff Crown Court on August 17.

Paul Michael Jones, known as Jonah, was discovered injured at a property on Columbus Close, Gibbonsdown, at around 10pm on August 3.

The 41-year-old, of Caradoc Avenue, later died at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

Chivers denies the murder charge.

South Wales Police are continuing an appeal for witnesses.

Meanwhile, family and friends have paid tribute to the victim.

His mum Maria said: "Paul was loving, generous and funny, with a heart of gold.

"He would help anybody, was always making people laugh, and I will miss our daily chats.

"He was a proud father who loved his children dearly, and he was much loved by all his family and friends.

"We would like to thank everybody for their kindness and support through this tragic time," she added.

"The floral tributes and warm messages have been overwhelming."

Friend Sasha Matthews, 22, of Merganser Court, Barry, said: "He was a loving father, a great friend and a good family man, and he’ll be missed by a lot of people."

Brenda (Ben) Harris, 45, of Merthyr Street, Barry, added: "He was amazing.

"He was a top friend and a great father."

A tribute group, RIP Jonah, has been set up on social networking site Facebook for people to share their memories and photographs.

Police are still appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity of Columbus Close at around 10pm on Monday, August 3, or anyone with information about the incident, to contact them at the Major Crime Incident Room in Penarth on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
