WELSH learners got a special visit from the town mayor to celebrate St David’s Day last Friday.

Mayor of Barry Councillor Ian Johnson joined Welsh learners at Palmerston Adult Community Learning Centre on Friday, March 1.

Learners from various levels of the Dysgu Cymraeg Y Fro (Learn Welsh in the Vale) program gathered for a special event to celebrate Wales's patron saint.

The event featured entertainment by harpists, a fun quiz about St David's life, and Welsh cakes for everyone to enjoy.

Cllr Johnson, said: “It was good to meet Welsh language learners who are at different points on their journey towards fluency.

“These included members of the same family who have made the decision to learn the language together.

“A couple from Hong King who have recently moved to Barry and chosen to learn Welsh and people with a family connection with the language or who have been moved to Wales and wanted to get back in touch with their roots.”

Cllr Johnson expressed his joy in learning the Welsh language as a pupil at Barry Boys' Comprehensive School.

He celebrated St David’s Day with those learning Welsh at Palmerston Adult Community Learning Centre.

He added: “Having learnt Welsh myself in Barry, as a pupil at Barry Boys’, I know the commitment needed to learn a language, but also the joy that brings in learning and understanding and being able to participate in Welsh Language culture and events.

“Barry has always had a Welsh-speaking community, as you can see from the Welsh chapels around town.

“These days we have four Welsh medium primary schools and many thousands of former pupils. I think St David would have been proud!”
