A PLAQUE recording the history of the Barry Railway was unveiled at a civic event at the recently renamed Barry War Museum and Heritage Centre.

Guests commemorated the centenary of the end of the Barry Railway Company, which became part of the Great Western Railway in 1923. 

The Barry Railway famously built the world’s first integrated rail and dock facilities at Barry in the 1880s  By 1913, Barry had become the busiest coal-exporting dock in the world.

The Mayor of Barry, Cllr Ian Johnson, and the deputy mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan, Cllr Elliot Penn, joined guests Peter Burns, chairperson of the Institution of Civil Engineers Cymru (ICE) and John Buxton, the new chairperson of the museum.

Cllr Penn said: “Organisations like Barry War Museum are our link to the past. They really bring home the struggles and sacrifices of past generations."

Chairperson John Buxton said: "The plaque will form a focal point in our museum to tell visitors of the town’s rich history”.
