CREWS from South Wales Fire and Rescue were called to reports of a train fire at Cardiff Central Station yesterday, Sunday, November 19.

A train service from Pontypridd to Barry Island stopped at Cardiff Central and was evacuated after a small fire was detected underneath a rail carriageway.

Platforms six, seven and eight were temporarily closed and passengers were removed from the train and moved to a different service.

The fire was put out by platform staff using a handheld extinguisher and the fire service attended the scene as a precaution.

A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “At approximately 4:26 pm on Sunday 19 November 2023, SWFRS received reports of a train fire at Cardiff Central Railway Station, Cardiff.

“Multiple crews were in attendance, alongside emergency services colleagues. A small fire was detected underneath a railway carriage but was out on arrival of the Fire Service

“A stop message was received at approximately 4:51 pm.”

The platforms re-opened shortly after with only minor disruption to other services.

A spokesperson for Transport for Wales said: “The 15:50 Pontypridd to Barry Island service was stopped at Cardiff Central after reports of a small object on fire underneath one of its carriages.

“The fire was put out by platform staff using a handheld extinguisher and the fire service attended as a precaution.

“Passengers were removed from the train and moved to a different service. Platforms 6, 7 and 8 were temporarily closed but reopened shortly after.

“Cardiff Central station remained open throughout and there was only minor disruption to a small number of services.”
