THERE was lots of rain, but the winds weren't too bad as we went out and about in the Vale when storm Ciaran hit.
Ciaran arrived full-on in the UK last night, November 1, with up to 100mph winds across the Channel Islands and a major incident declared in Hampshire, however the storm moved rapidly northwards and it looks as if the Vale was only licked by the tail-end of it.
Very wet, pretty windy, but at least the ducks got fed…
Evaluating how the Vale would stand up to Ciaran, the only place we could start was Whitmore Bay and when we got there at just after morning high tide, 9am those hardiest of hardy people, dog walkers – albeit just a handful of them - were on the beach in their rain macs and woolly hats.
The dogs looked like they were having a good time hopping and skipping in the strong breeze.
Next we went to the Knap beachfront, which was all but deserted then, extraordinarily, the people of Barry went up exponentially in estimations as, despite the weather warnings and threats of disruption and danger to life, the ducks still got fed!
Cathy and Rose were on hand to feed the ducks and swans who looked quite relaxed at the edge of Marine Lake.
Rose explained that the pair go on a walk and feed the ducks every day and, having considered they might not be able to come out today, they were surprised to find the weather wasn’t as bad as predicted. The wildlife of Knap Gardens was delighted!

Romilly Park was empty apart from a few more dog walkers, however the park’s trees were holding up well.
The Sully coastline was soaking wet, but yet again Ciaran couldn’t ward off the dog walkers.
Penarth Pier was closed due to the storm.
And at Penarth Marina and the barrage, the yachts and vessels were barely bobbing with any form of disruption.
There was disruption at Cardiff Airport though. KLM cancelled flights to Amsterdam due to the storm.
All Flights to Jersey and Guernsey were also cancelled.
And we’re not out the woods yet, with Met Office weather warnings still in place for the county for wind until 5pm and rain until midnight.
