CREWS from Barry RNLI were called into action in the early hours of Friday morning to reports of a becalmed boat.

Volunteer crews were called at 2.30 a.m. on Friday, October 20 to reports of a becalmed boat with a lone sailor approximately seven miles Northeast of Foreland Point.

The boat had no communications with the coastguard, a weak mobile phone signal, and an approximate latitude and longitude were passed out to our all-weather lifeboat.

The vessel was located within 45 minutes of streaming to the location the lifeboat identified the casual vessel via radar in the dark night.

The casualty vessel had no lights due to low battery and was then towed back to Barry Harbour, in a 3-and-a-half-hour rescue.

A spokesperson for RNLI Barry Dock said: “On such a dark night, the vessel was not displaying any lights due to a low battery.

"With no significant means of propulsions to the nearest safe harbour and no wind to sail our volunteer crew established a tow to escort the vessel back to Barry harbour.

“Our all-weather lifeboat once safely back alongside her berth in Barry, replenished, refuelled and ready for her next service, where our volunteer crew head straight to work to start their day at 7.20 am.”
