TRANSPORT for Wales is celebrating the thousands of people who have used its service to flock to the beach this summer- and that demand could be set to rise with a weekend of sun according to the weather forecast.
However, going the other way seems a little more difficult for the people of Barry...
In August, Barry-ite David Bradley took a shocking photo of a rammed carriage jam-packed with commuters making the slog into Cardiff from Barry Docks station.
Mr Bradley, a care home manager, said TFW should be “ashamed” of the service they offer the people of Barry during rush hour times.
At the time, TfW apologised for the busy service while revealing new carriages are planned to come on the Barry line.
Now, Wales’ national rail service is celebrating the sheer number of people it is herding to beauty hot spots like Whitmore Bay and Penarth Pier.
TfW say Barry Island saw 57,015 travel in by train between July and August.
Network Rail’s performance and transformation director for Wales Gwyn Rees said: “Wales is blessed with some of the best seaside and coastal destinations in the world so it’s great to see people jumping on the train to take advantage of that.”
TfW planning and performance director Colin Lea added: “We know that being able to run good, reliable services to these key destinations is vital for the growth of those local economies.”
Indian Summer kicks in in South Wales this weekend
You might need to find the sunscreen for this weekend with the Met Office predicting something called “sun” showing itself on Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday starts off cloudy, but will see sun breakthrough with full rays expected into the evening and highs of 18 degrees.
After early morning mist clears, Sunday will see sun all day and highs of 20 degrees.
So, will you be jumping on the train to head to the beach this weekend? Did you manage to get to the beach this summer with all the rain! How’s the train service for you going from Barry to the rest of the world? Is it a great asset to the local economy, or is it a jam packed/ delayed / cancelled nightmare?
