THOUSANDS of people flocked to Barry Island for the Barry Athletic Fun Football Festival event in August.

Nearly 2,000 people attended the event organised by the Football Association of Wales.

The festival was sponsored by the McDonald’s Fun Football programme and included football-based activities for young players to practice skills and learn new ones.

Amongst the guests for the event were FAW ambassadors and former Wales internationals Helen Ward and Joe Ledley, who earned 102 and 77 caps for their country.

Barry Town Mayor, Cllr Ian Johnson said: “It was a great pleasure to see the Barry Athletic ground so full of young players.

“It was also lovely to chat with Helen and Joe about their many years of experience as Wales internationals, I was given a tour of the facilities by Barry Athletic volunteers.

“Safeguarding officer Annemarie McKay and under 13s coach, Nicola Hobrow, where we talked about the club's platinum award which is the FAW’s highest level club accreditation.

“We discussed the work involved in running a large organisation with more than 350 members from mini football to adults, good luck to everyone at Barry Athletic for the new season.”

Mr Ledley and Ms Ward took time to meet with young players and share some of the skills they have picked up over their years in the game.

Barry Athletic would like to thank Barry Town Council for the loan of their litter-picking equipment for the event.
