A CHIC new wine shop in one of the funkiest shopping areas of Barry that wants to make buying wine affordable and accessible. Too good to be true? Maybe not...

Wine shop corc. has opened at one of Barry’s hippest shopping districts – the Goodsheds.

Walk through the smart-looking entranceway, past the electric green hanging baskets of the cool-looking food court and onto what’s brilliantly known as the “urban high street”, and down the way, past the independent clothes stores and accessory shops you’ll find corc., a small but chic wine shop that wants to make it relaxing to buy wine.

Co-founders Nick Lawrence and Emily Weaver have extensive experience in hospitality. Ms Weaver has managed multiple restaurants, while Mr Lawrence went from cheffing, to cocktail making, to training as a sommelier – where he worked in the prestigious James Sommerin’s Michelin starred Home restaurant in Penarth.

Ms Weaver explained the pair’s aim as they finally got the keys to their own place.

“People can be intimidated buying wine,” said Ms Weaver, “but you should not feel like that. You do not feel you need to be a chef to buy good food so why should you feel you should be a connoisseur of wine to buy nice wine? We want to bring wine down to an accessible level.”

Goodsheds is the brilliant makeover of the old railway carriages near Barry Docks and it’s expanding, with corc. one of its newest members - getting the keys to their carriage in January and opening in the middle of April.

And what’s cool about corc., apart from the blacked-out carriages, chic décor and inde traders, is that selling isn’t in your face.

Mr Lawrence explained that corc. wanted to grow “naturally”.

“It's building nicely,” said Mr Lawrence. “We opened softly and wanted to see how it would naturally progress.

“And every bottle here we have tried and are happy to sell.”

Ms Weaver said she hoped the people of Barry will get to enjoy there wines.

“Local support will be key to us," said Ms Weaver. "People need to be more aware there are shops here as well as the food court, but everything is going well so far.”
