OVER 20 schools will close in the Vale of Glamorgan as strikes cripple education in the county.

Teachers go on the first of four planned strikes in Wales on Wednesday, February 1.

We have a comprehensive list of schools in the county and how strike action will affect them.

Vale of Glamorgan Council leader, Cllr Lis Burnett, said she supported the right to strike.

“The right to strike is a fundamental right for workers which was hard won,” said Cllr Burnett.

“I support that right. Teachers have voted democratically to take action and I know will not have done so lightly.”

Last minute talks between the government and unions ended in failure, with BBC reporting that National Association of Head Teachers general secretary Paul Whiteman said a meeting with the secretary of state had been "unproductive" and that the secretary "was unable to make any offer on the eve of industrial action".

The Vale’s Cllr Burnett went on to describe relations with unions in the county as good.

“Here in the Vale we have a very constructive working relationship with our trade union colleagues,” said Cllr Burnett.

“I hope those operating at a national level can find ways to work together in this spirit and find a resolution that enables those who play such an important role in supporting children and young people to continue to work.”

Laura Doel, director of NAHT Cymru, said the action was not just as simple as wanting a pay rise.

"Our action seeks to protect the delivery of education while at the same time making the feelings of our members heard loud and clear,” said Ms Doel.

"School leaders are making a stand and pushing back on the many administrative burdens placed upon them which have a huge impact on their workload and take away from their core business of leading their schools.”

On the specific issue of the National Education Union strike on Wednesday, she added: "Headteachers will be carrying out risk assessments based on what they anticipate might happen on the day - but they can’t know for sure whether they will be able to open their schools until they see what staffing levels they have available.

"If they don’t have safe levels of staff available they may be forced to close the school partially or fully for the day. These decisions will be taken on a case by case basis based on the information available.

“While some schools will be closed next week as a result of industrial action, we respect the legitimate action of a sister trade union whose fight is our fight.”
