A PREVIOUSLY derelict space in Barry has been transformed into a community garden.

The area – off Margaret Avenue in Colcot – has been transformed into ‘Everyone’s Garden’ and includes:

  • A greenhouse made from recycled plastic bottles;
  • A play area;
  • An allotment;
  • An education centre.

To celebrate the completion of the project, an open day was held on Wednesday, October 19, giving the community an opportunity to check out Everyone’s Garden.

Barry And District News:

The Vale of Glamorgan Council project was a collaborative effort with partners and residents.

Partners who worked with the community – including through public consultations – to make the garden a reality include:

  • Colcot Primary School;
  • Colcot Residents Association;
  • Bouygues UK;
  • Horizon Civil Engineering;
  • National Resources Wales;
  • Eggseeds;
  • Home Education Wales;
  • Vale Youth Service;
  • Flying Start;
  • Vale Homes.

Barry And District News:

Community groups and Colcot Primary School will be instrumental in the gardens upkeep and maintenance, many of which have already held events, workshops, and wellbeing sessions at the site.

Cabinet Member for Public Sector Housing and Tenant Engagement, Cllr Margaret Wilkinson, said:

“It’s been great to see the progress of the site. It has been transformed from a fly-tipping hotspot into a safe community hub.

“The project’s success is thanks to the collective effort of many services, organisations, and the community – well done to everyone involved!

“It’s wonderful to see local groups and schools make use of the space and going forward I hope that many more will embrace the wonderful facilities it has to offer.”
