A BARRY woman has achieved her dream: publishing her very own book.

Susan Davies, who is a learning support assistant and has been based at Cadoxton Nursery and Primary School for the past 15 years, has written her own children’s book: The Riddle of Roary.

Mrs Davies has three children – who are now adults – Kirsty, Hayley, and Ashley. She’s also grandmother to Alfie – who inspired the story – and Harry and Evie.

“Alfie was born in 2016 and his love of picture books at a young age inspired me to write this story about him,” said Mrs Davies.

“When the book was in its first stages I read it to my reception class at school and – after listening to their feedback, predictions, and giggles – it was deemed a success, so here we are.”

Barry And District News:

While Alfie inspired the book, which was pubished earlier this year, Mrs Davies has always been a keen reader and writer – having written stories from the age of 11. Her love for reading was prompted by her Nanna Yia who always bought her Enid Blyton books and comics.

“My dream was to get a book published, and now I've actually accomplished it,” said Mrs Davies.

She added that it was a “wonderful feeling” to give signed copies of the book to the 500 pupils at Cadoxton Primary School, with many local schools also hosting readings of her work.

“There are many personal touches to my story,” continued Mrs Davies.

“I wanted Alfie and his dad to have a close relationship, the same as I had with my dad; he was never without his spy glass which my own children loved to look through.

“I also wanted to recognise that in life we all make mistakes, and I needed Alfie and his dad to try and solve a big problem together.”

Characters included were inspired by some of her favourite Disney characters from childhood and motherhood – with Miss Tong, who wears a wig, based on herself.

“I originally trained as a hairdresser and also lost my hair to cancer and wore a wig, which would always move around,” explained Ms Davies.

“I hope you and your little ones enjoy reading it as much as I've enjoyed writing it.”
