A BARRY park was taken over by family fun on National Play Day.

National Play Day was celebrated on Wednesday, August 3, across Wales and the UK.

It aims to highlight the important role that play has on children and young people’s physical health, mental health, and relationships.

In celebration of the day a free fun-filled family day was hosted at Romilly Park in Barry.

The day was packed with opportunities to play, including arts, crafts, sports, and sensory activites.

Barry And District News:

This year’s theme was ‘all to play for – building play opportunities for all children’ with the play day at Romilly Park organised by numerous organisations.

This included:

  • The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s sports and play team;
  • Vale Youth Service;
  • Flying Start Team;
  • Family Information Service;
  • Vale Parenting Service;
  • Vale Libraries and Adult Learning Team.

Cabinet member for leisure, sport and wellbeing, Cllr Gwyn John, said:

“The day was a great success, and it was fantastic to see so many children and young people engaging with the activities and enjoying themselves.

“Following the challenges children and young people have faced during recent years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, play is more important than ever.

“Well done to everyone involved!”

Barry And District News:

The day is just one of many free activities available for young people this summer.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has partnered with a range of community organisations to create a Summer of Fun programme.

The scheme is funded by Welsh Government and aims to support the wellbeing of children and young people to continue their recovery from the Covid restrictions of the last two years.

It also aims to help families with the costs of activities during the summer holidays.

Summer Of Fun will run until September 30 and offers a range of free activities, suitable for children and young people aged up to 25.
