MORE than £10,000 has been raised for Ukraine by 14 schools in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The conflict in Ukraine has prompted many in the Vale of Glamorgan, and further afield, to raise funds or collect donations for the millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes in Ukraine.

Since the war broke out, schools from across the Vale have organised fundraising events, including cake sales, sponsored cycle rides, donation collections, wrist band sales, sponsored silences, and blue and yellow themed clothing days.

So far, 14 schools – including five in Barry – have raised £10,357 for the cause.

Vale of Glamorgan Council staff have also been raising funds, through Miles for Ukraine - a 1,775-mile virtual journey from the Civic offices in Barry to Ukraine.

Since March 16, teams and staff have been walking, running, cycling, and knitting their way to Ukraine to raise money for the campaign – with £1,584 raised so far.

On April 5, the 1,775-mile target was achieved, and the new challenge is making the return journey back to Barry.

Money raised by schools and the council will be donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal to help deliver shelter, food, water, and other essentials to those who are escaping the war.
