A BARRY group has raised £2,000 to help people fleeing the war in Ukraine.

Barry Yacht Club held an event in their compass bar and clubroom on Friday, March 18, to raise funds for the Disasters Emergency Committee who are providing funds to Ukraine to help with relief efforts.

More than £1,000 was raised by the club through a quiz where attendees made donations, took part in a raffle and sold Ukrainian ribbon badges made by the committee.

More than 30 prizes were available from the raffle including Penderyn whiskey, craft gins, spirits and wines. Local businesses donated many prizes alongside club members and those taking part in the quiz.

To add to the feel of the day, there was Ukrainian flag bunting, blue and yellow napkins on the tables and many guests wore blue and yellow in a show of solidarity.

The event was attended by Janice Charles of the Vale of Glamorgan and Barry Town Councils where she helped to draw the raffle prizes. The quizmaster was Len Cattle.

The club also hosted an additional fundraiser for their club members where they could win a free year of membership for a £20 donation. The donations from this event came to £1,000 and this is being donated to the Red Cross for their efforts in helping Ukrainians.

Jen Haig Harrison, chairwoman of the social events team at Barry Yacht Club and who organised the fundraisers, said: “Our committee felt an imperative to do something which could allow members to contribute in a fundraising endeavour.

“The plight of thousands who are now displaced, and suffering, was our focus. It took only two minutes for us to agree on ‘quiz for crisis’ as a worthwhile project.”
