A RECENTLY-CLOSED village school in the Vale of Glamorgan is set to be sold off by the council.

Llancarfan Primary School controversially closed and was replaced by South Point Primary School in Rhoose, five miles down the road.

The closure sparked fierce protests from parents and ultimately led to the collapse of the Tory-led administration at Vale of Glamorgan council.

Now the buildings that used to house the village school are due to be sold, likely either for housing, or as a shop or cafe.

South Point opened to pupils on March 2, and has been called the “first net-zero school in Wales”. The new school is much larger than the previous one, although it is currently at less than half of its capacity.

On Monday, March 14, the council’s cabinet will likely approve plans to dispose of the old school buildings in Llancarfan.

A cabinet report said: “The Llancarfan Primary School site will be surplus to requirements given that the school has formally moved to the new site in Rhoose known as South Point. There is no current use or future requirement to use this land for educational purposes.”

According to the report, the main building is locally listed, and any purchaser would struggle to get permission to demolish it. But potential uses include shops, homes, or leisure.
