WELSH Government has published the latest data on fly-tipping in Wales this year (2020-2021).

Across Wales 41,071 incidents of fly-tipping were recorded this year:

  • 24,354 in South East Wales.
  • 8,963 in Mid and South West Wales.
  • 7,754 in North Wales.

This year Vale of Glamorgan had the second lowest number of recorded incidents of fly-tipping at 393; Ceredigion has the lowest number of recorded incidents of fly-tipping at 134.

Comparatively, last year (2019-2020) 371 incidents were recorded in the Vale of Glamorgan, with 357 incidents recorded in 2018-2019, 324 in 2017-2018, and 612 in 2016-2017.

The Welsh Government data begins in 2006-2007, with 2,630 incidents recorded in the Vale of Glamorgan that year.

Ceredigion has consistently had a lower number of recorded incidents of fly-tipping than Vale of Glamorgan, but Vale of Glamorgan’s number of recorded incidents has not always been second lowest across Wales.

Last year Vale of Glamorgan had the second lowest number of recorded incidents of fly-tipping, but the year prior to that (2018-2019) the Vale of Glamorgan had more recorded incidents than Gwynedd, Ceredigion, and Monmouthshire.

This year clearance cost by size was £16,895 in the Vale of Glamorgan. Across South East Wales the total clearance cost by size was higher than North Wales (£403,669) and Mid and South West Wales (£590,677) at a total of £1,148,710.

Out of all local authorities in South East Wales the clearance cost by size in Vale of Glamorgan was cheaper than the other areas, with the highest cleareance cost by size being Cardiff at £349,428.

In fact, across Wales the Vale of Glamorgan had the second lowest clearance cost by size – topped only by Ceredigion with a cost of £5,454.

Clearance cost in size for Vale of Glamorgan this year includes:

  • £7,168 small van loads.
  • £3,741 car boot or less.
  • £3,219 single items.
  • £2,760 transit van loads.
  • £7 single black bag.

This year across Wales 17 fines have been dished out for fly-tipping, the lowest number of fines included since the data began (2006-2007).

In 2019-2020 there were 29 fines in Wales, and in 2018-2019 there were 118 fines given - the highest number included within this data.

During the 2020-2021 period there was also one absolute/conditional discharge given in Wales.

Other enforcement taken across Wales in the latest data includes:

  • 23,708 investigations.
  • 568 fixed penalty notices.
  • 468 warning letters.
  • 246 duty or care inspections.
  • 38 statutory notices.
  • 17 prosecutions.
