Wales has seen another 12 deaths due to covid, the latest figures show.

According to Public Health Wales (PHW), the number of people who have now lost their lives due to the virus stands at 6,086.

This includes 1,039 in the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board area – which covers Newport and the wider Gwent area.

Across the latest testing period, there has been 3,152 new positive cases of coronavirus in Wales.

Of these, the most were found in Cardiff, where 441 new cases were reported.

However, while the individual areas of Gwent saw lower case numbers, relative to the percentage of the population, covid is actually more prevalent in Blaenau Gwent and Newport than anywhere else nationwide.

The 103 cases in Blaenau Gwent equates to 147.4 cases per 100,000 residents, while the 220 cases in Newport is the equivalent of 142.2 cases per 100,000 people.

This is significantly higher than the third most prevalent area – Ceredigion, where there is 123.8 cases per 100,000 people.

Elsewhere in Gwent, Caerphilly has seen 219 new cases, Torfaen has 96, and Monmouthshire recorded 87 cases of covid.

At this time, 2,421,700 people have had their first covid vaccination, and 2,238,954 people have had their second dose of the vaccine.
