A COMMUNITY café and event space has recently opened its doors in Barry.
After helping the community during the Covid pandemic, family support non-profit CUBE (Community United Barry 4 Everyone) – which formed in 2020 – has opened a café and event venue on Barry’s Broad Street.
The Gallery offers a modern location for events – including weddings – and a separate café which aims to provide a community space to help tackle loneliness, an issue that has been intensified during the Covid pandemic.
Customers can pop in for a chat and a coffee or pay for a ‘suspended coffee’ for someone in need.
The new venue will raise money for CUBE’s charitable aims, allowing them to continue to help families and individuals living with or affected by mental health, grief and loss, domestic abuse, and addiction
CUBE has helped people throughout the coronavirus pandemic including a resident – known by the alias ‘Janet’ – who was struggling during lockdown with her child's behaviour. Her child was screaming at and hitting her, saying that they hated her.
Janet said: “I am so thankful for the support I received from CUBE. Not only has my child had amazing support, but my home is happier and calmer.”
The venue on Broad Street in Barry will also become the home and workspace for CUBE who – up until now – had not has a base of operations.
The Gallery, on Broad Street, officially launched on October 18 at an event which included speeches from Chief Executive of CUBE, Tammi Owen, and Alun Cairns MP for the Vale of Glamorgan.

Following the launch Mr Cairns said: “It was a wonderful launch at The Gallery and CUBE offers a vital service.
“Tammi Owen has fantastically led the team to secure funding and a beautiful premises on Broad Street to home their community initiative.
“I want to wish Tammi and the team the best of luck as they continue their long journey to support the people of Barry.”
The National Lottery Community Fund awarded £500,000 over three years to set up and run CUBE.
The project has also been supported by the Social Business Growth Fund which is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government and is administered by Social Investment Cymru at WCVA (Wales Council for Voluntary Action).
