IT’S NEVER too late to try tennis in Barry – with a free series of beginner sessions for over 60s.

The ‘golden pass scheme’ enables people of all abilities to enjoy walking tennis and is run by Vale of Glamorgan Council with support from Barry Athletic Tennis Club.

The coach-led sessions, held on Friday mornings, use low compression balls and adapted rules from ‘walking tennis’ to help new players grow their confidence, with the potential to become club members or enjoy social tennis evenings.

All equipment is provided, with covid guidelines in place to keep people safe, and non-members are welcome.

Coach at Barry Athletic Tennis Club, Rob Wedlake, said: “The Golden Pass offers massive encouragement and makes it easy to give people the confidence to give tennis a go for the over 60s.

“Come along, enjoy a game of tennis, and a chance to make new friends.”

The free sessions for over 60s are at Barry Athletic Tennis Club every Friday at 11am.

Veteran tennis player Andy Green encourages other over 60s to have a go at tennis.

He said: “Tennis is an ideal sport for mature people. It combines a gentle athleticism while also being a great opportunity for socialising and being part of a community.”
