POLICE broke up numerous illegal gatherings over the weekend, including one in Rhoose.

South Wales Police handed out 240 fines to people breaching coronavirus restrictions on the weekend, with four people gathered at a house in Rhoose among the hundreds fined.

Despite First Minister Mark Drakeford’s recent confirmation that Alert Level Four restrictions in Wales will continue for at least three weeks some people still defied the current restrictions resulting in police action.

The previous weekend South Wales Police fined 130 people for coronavirus breaches, and the weekend prior to that South Wales Police gave out 90 fines.

Others fined in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan for flouting coronavirus restrictions on the weekend are:

  • 20 people - including guests from Swansea - at a house party in Cathays.
  • Nine people at a house party in Llanbethery.
  • Nine people at a house party in Cathays.
  • 13 people at a house party in Llandaff North.
  • Six people at a house party in Fairwater.
  • Six people at a house party in Ely.
  • Five people at a house party in Cathays.
  • Eight people who who were drinking alcohol in public gardens in Llandaff,

Unlike in previous weeks South Wales Police have not shared the number of potential coronavirus breaches that they were alerted of during this time period.

Chief Superintendent Andy Valentine said: “While we fully appreciate how challenging these restrictions have been, the very fact that they have been extended demonstrates that now is not the time for complacency.

"Blatant breaches such as the ones witnessed by our officers over the weekend compromise the progress that has been achieved by the vast majority who are following the rules, and places additional strain on our already-stretched health services.

“Such flagrant breaches cannot be tolerated and we will continue to respond to concerns from our communities, carry out proactive patrols and work closely with our local authority partners on the Joint Enforcement Teams to ensure those who blatantly or repeatedly breach the rules are met with enforcement action.”
