This is a picture of Barry Island and the railway.
The trains in this photograph are running to and from Barry Island Passenger Pier through the tunnel which runs under part of the island. The opening of Barry Passenger Pier in July 1899 was seen as a commercial triumph.
Trains and steam ships worked together to provide a service from Barry to places along the Bristol coast.

One of the first excursions was by the staff of the Wenvoe Estate (now a golf club). A party of eighty left Wenvoe Station at 9am and sailed from Barry to Lynmouth. They visited the Montebello Hotel for a sumptuous dinner. This famous hotel in Lynmouth history sadly burnt down in 2006 and was demolished. The Wenvoe Estate staff return journey sailed from Ilfracome at 6pm. They arrived at Cardiff at 9.30pm, caught the train home, finally arriving at 11pm. A quite a day out in 1899.
