A TIMELORD descended on Barry Island earlier this week, joined by terrifying villains.

A Doctor Who production team, along with the 13th doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker, and the haunting Weeping Angels have been filming for season 13 of the show at Cold Knap Beach.

The actress and team were spotted by locals bracing the cold, wet conditions to carry out filming for the series on Monday (January 11).

The BBC sci-fi show is no stranger to Wales; over the years filming has taken place in various locations across Wales – here are just a few places that have been featured in Doctor Who...

Last month the formidable foes and crew were spotted in Penarth, suggesting that the Weeping Angels are an important part in season 13 of Doctor Who.

And Barry is no stranger to Doctor Who with parts of season 12 of the hit show filmed there in March of 2019.

Locals snapped up the opportunity to take selfies with cast members at the time, including Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole - who both previously performed as companions - and Mandip Gill.

The Welsh capital has also been a popular filming spot for the BBC show over the years, including:

Cardiff Castle

Located in the heart of Cardiff, this castle has been a regular filming location for Doctor Who and the spin-off show Torchwood.

Llandaff

The fictional town of Leadworth, featured in Doctor Who, is actually based in Cardiff’s Llandaff with the eleventh doctor – Matt Smith – making his debut at Cathedral Green.

St Fagans National History Museum

With the Timelord able to travel through space and time in the TARDIS St Fagans – which chronicles Welsh history – was an ideal place for filming, taking the crew back in time to 1913.

National Museum of Cardiff

This venue has featured in Doctor Who on numerous occasions, including the 50th anniversary special in which Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt teamed up.

Wales Millennium Centre

Based on Cardiff Bay, this filming location is a familiar sight to fans of Doctor Who and Torchwood as it has featured regularly on both shows.

Other locations that Doctor Who has been filmed at over the years include Llansannor Court in Cowbridge, Dyffryn Garden in the Vale, and many more places across Wales and England.

Season 13 of Doctor Who should be released later this year, although an exact date is not yet known.

Last month the BBC confirmed that the number of episodes in this series has been cut back from 11 episodes to eight as a result of restrictions stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.

Rumours have been circulating that it will be Whittaker’s final season as the Timelord.
