FROM the Archive this week features a photograph of Barry town.
Around the time this photograph was taken c1910, Barry's medical officer of health published the Vital Statistics of Barry for the last year.
The estimated population of Barry at the time of the photograph was 33,210 with 931 births in the year and deaths of 321.
Barry was very much still a growing town but still managed to produce 5,233 tons of refuse which was disposed of in the town Destructor.

Opened on February 27, 1901 the Destructor was the first in Wales to burn household rubbish.
Officially opened by Cllr J.H. Jose who tipped the first load of refuse and set it alight, he was presented with a suitably inscribed silver matchbox to mark the occasion.
The population of Barry in 1910 mainly consisted of workers who were fitters, boilermakers, ships repairers, coal trimmers, dock labourers, railway employees and seamen.
The Barry & District News would like to thank Terry Sylvester for the photograph and Cllr Shirley Hodges for the information.
