THE Vale of Glamorgan Council has said a scheme addressing the regeneration of part of Barry town centre will be considered later this year.

Vale council cabinet members will consider the Barry Town Centre Gateway Regeneration project.

The project aims to create a mix of new homes, commercial premises and buildings for community use around the Gladstone Road/Broad Street roundabout junction and the vicinity of the west end of Holton Road.

Members of public have complained about the outward appearance of the Broad Street Clinic - calling it an 'eyesore' - near the Civic Offices in Holton Road.

The Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said it will try to improve the appearance of the building which was established in 1959 – more than 60 years ago.

The building houses a number of different services on a rolling basis including podiatry, continence, primary mental health, speech and language therapy, sexual health, and ophthalmology.

It is also the base of two district nurse teams which serve Barry.

Buttrills ward Vale and Barry Town Council councillor, Ian Johnson said: "Disappointingly the Broad Street Clinic has been left by the Health Board to go to ruin and has been in need of improvement for decades.

"It is important that health services currently provided at the clinic remain available in the town centre, but we must think about what is needed to improve the whole Gladstone Bridge area, including the empty compound site nearby and other dilapidated buildings.

“I have warned the council that they shouldn't just be putting housing on every available spot of land.

“The Vale council need to be ambitious and bring the area to life with restaurants and shopping so that it becomes part of a seamless move from Holton Road towards the Waterfront and High Street.”

A Cardiff and Vale University Health Board spokesman said that due to covid-19 Broad Street Clinic services had been temporarily suspended and the building is closed to patients.

He said: “We will endeavour to improve the external appearance of the buildings, but ask the public to be patient with us as the Health Board deals with current operational pressures across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.”

A Vale council spokesman said: “The Barry Town Centre Gateway Regeneration project is a council initiative that aims to create a mix of new homes, commercial premises and buildings for community use around the Gladstone Road/Broad Street Roundabout junction and the vicinity of the west end of Holton Road.

“The scheme is currently being assessed for viability, while funding and planning permission also need to be secured for it to proceed.

“Discussions with Welsh Government and other stakeholders are ongoing and the council’s cabinet is due to consider a report on the project later in the year.”
