THIRTY-FIVE young people from across the Vale were recently awarded their Agored Cymru certifications.

They were presented by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s youth service and the ambassadors rights project.

The certificates are normally given at an annual presentation evening.

But due to the covid-19 situation, this year the projects organised ceremonies at the doorsteps of those who took part.

Of the total, 24 young people obtained the Agored Cymru UNCRC level 1, whilst 11 of them completed the Agored Cymru Children, Young People and Adults Rights in Wales Entry level 3 qualification.

As part of the courses, the youngsters attended between 16 to 20 hours of evening and weekend training sessions.

Many of them also used the opportunity to build up volunteering hours for the Duke of Edinburgh and Welsh Baccalaureate schemes.

A range of activities were organised to engage and accommodate the learners, as well as support the development of transferable skills.

The training also enabled them to develop workshops and presentations to raise awareness of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture and Young People’s Champion, Cllr Kathryn McCaffer said: “Despite the current limitations posed by the coronavirus, it was incredibly important that the work of these young people be rightly recognised and celebrated which is why I was pleased to be part of the celebration video.

“Congratulations to all the young people who completed their qualifications, and to the teams who organised the doorstep award ceremonies.”

The Vale rights ambassador project is open to all young people across the county.

Those aged 11 to 25 will receive accredited training about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and be supported to develop and deliver interactive children’s rights workshops across the county.

The project continues to grow.

Last year more than 1000 children, young people and adults took part in workshops and presentations delivered by the Vale rights ambassadors.

1241 hours of volunteering were completed by members.
