THE West Quay Medical Centre in Barry has made the shortlist for the 2020 HSJ Patient Safety Awards.

The awards aim to improve patient safety through better access to appropriate healthcare professionals in Primary Care - a whole-system approach.

West Quay Medical Centre has been shortlisted for Quality Improvement Initiative of the Year at this year’s HSJ Patient Safety Awards, recognising their outstanding contribution to healthcare.

The Practice has been shortlisted despite tough competition from hundreds of applicants.

Improving Patient Safety by better Access to Appropriate Healthcare Professionals in Primary Care - a whole-system approach has been selected based on the ambition, visionary spirit and the demonstrable positive impact that their project has had on patient and staff experiences within the health and social care sector.

The judging panel is made up of respected figures within the healthcare community including Rachel Power, chief executive, The Patients Association, Jean Knight, chief operating officer, Northamptonshire Healthcare FT, and Vincent Badu, deputy chief executive, Kent & Medway Partnership Trust.

West Quay Medical Centre project lead and quality improvement adviser, Dr Sue Goodfellow said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for the Quality Improvement Initiative of the year at the 2020 Patient Safety Awards, recognising the collaborative efforts and dedication of our whole team over the last 12 months to successfully implement this ambitious improvement project.

“We are committed to delivering improved outcomes that matter to our patients, by working in co-production with our patient participation group, who are key members of our practice improvement team.

“To be chosen among the other incredible nominees is a wonderful achievement which has been a tremendous boost to staff at West Quay Medical Centre, and I am sure it will bolster our continuous improvement culture within the practice, and encourage spread & scale of improvement ideas.”

Winners will be selected ahead of the ceremony, which will take place virtually as part of the Patient Safety Virtual Congress and Awards in November 2020.
